The Backlog:

Denver

Of 1,064 rape kits collected by the Denver Police Department between 2007 and 2012, 470 remained untested as of July 2012. At that time, the Department, which has its own on-site crime lab, generally tested stranger rape cases, but rarely tested non-stranger cases. After Colorado passed legislation in 2013 requiring the counting and testing of rape kits booked into evidence, Denver Police reported having 998 previously untested kits.
