The Backlog:

Los Angeles

In 2009, Human Rights Watch uncovered a backlog of more than 12,500 untested rape kits in Los Angeles County, the largest known backlog in the United States at that time. The backlog in the city of Los Angeles alone was 6,132 kits. By cobbling together funding from various sources, Los Angeles was able to clear its backlog as of April 2011. The testing of these kits led to 753 matches in the national DNA database. To date, it is unclear how many of Los Angeles County's kits have been tested.
