Statement of Manhattan DA Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. On Congressional Funding To Help Eliminate Rape Kit Backlogs In Cities Nationwide
Inclusion of $41 Million in Omnibus Spending Bill Follows D.A.’s Commitment of $35 Million Last Month
$41 million to address the nation’s rape kit backlog is in the FY15 spending bill released by congressional leaders.
This new initiative will enable communities to develop a thorough approach to rape kit testing, investigation and prosecution of sexual violence, training for law enforcement and services for survivors.
On May 20, 2010, Mariska testified before the United States House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on the backlog of untested rape kits in this country.
